This is a specialist darning class from Tom van Deijnen, aka Tom of Holland, and is for people who can already knit and graft. You will learn how to repair holes that are too large for the regular stocking darn, using two techniques: the web darn and knitting in a patch. Students are encouraged to bring some items that need repairing and also a knitted swatch to practise on, knitting needles and any left-over yarn. The Museum's Head of Conservation will then show the group round the Conservation Lab, where you will have the opportunity to look more closely at a range of objects repaired by originating communities before they came to the Museum, from darned lace handkerchiefs to ivory armlets. You'll take home a comprehensive handout, a darning needle and impressive darning skills!
